They suspected a bad hard drive and attempted some diagnostics and other (cheaper) fixes, but ultimately they had to replace the drive. Thought the pricing was fair as they charged me an amount less than the sum of the diagnostics and the drive replacement as priced individually. The system was ready when promised, fully loaded with the latest version of Mac OS. When brought home and connected to its Time Machine backup, everything restored as designed.
